Advice on adapting videos and CD ROMs
to other languages:
1) When you make an audiovisual program, always bear in mind that
it could be adapted to other languages in order
to be broadcast in other countries in different languages.
2) Remember that when translating a program in English into
other languages, it is highly likely that the volume of text
will increase in the target languages since English is a very
concise language. For instance, a text in English when translated
into Spanish or French increases by approximately 15%.
3) Do not make abrupt cuts between dialogues and images. A
smooth transition between scenes, and making sure that the speaker
speaks as slowly as possible, will make it easier for
narration in other languages to match up with the image.
4) It is possible that several versions will have to be made for
different countries that use the same language. For example,
even though a version in written Spanish may be suitable for
Spain and Puerto Rico, it is a different matter for the
spoken language. This would mean choosing several speakers
according to the countries at which the program is targeted.
5) Provide the program that is to be adapted on a video
with two sound tracks- a track with the narration
and another track with the music and effects. If the audio is
mixed, it will be necessary to redo the music and effects track
to adapt it to another language.
6) If you use graphics that contain text, make sure that they
are static and that the text is separated as much as possible
from the graphics to avoid having to redo them in
the adaptation.
7) If you need to subtitle, try to ensure that the
bottom quarter of the screen does not contain important
graphics or images. When someone important appears on
screen, it is advisable to subtitle instead of dubbing,
since it may be important to hear the person's real voice.
8) Remember that, depending on the country, different video
formats are used - NTST, PAL, SECAM.
9) The speakers that carry out the narration must always be
professionals who live in the country where the program is
going to be distributed.
10) Always remember that the names of products, trademarks
and companies may be pronounced differently according
to different countries, sometimes with no
apparent logic. |
